How Can You Tell If a Rug Is Hand-Knotted?

To check if a rug is hand knotted, flip it over. A genuine hand-knotted rug will show the pattern clearly on the back, with slightly irregular knots visible across the entire surface. There's no latex coating, no fabric backing, no attempt to hide what's underneath. The back of the rug tells you everything the front won't.


That's the fastest test, but it's not the only one.

Other ways to check if a rug is hand-knotted?


  1. Check the fringe

    On a hand-knotted rug, the fringe isn't decorative trim sewn on at the end. It's structural. Those threads are the actual warp threads that the knots were tied around during weaving. Pull gently at the fringe and you'll feel it's continuous with the body of the rug. If the fringe is glued or stitched to the edge, the rug was made through a different process entirely.


  1. Fold a small section back on itself

    When you fold a hand-knotted rug, you can see individual knots along the fold line. The pile separates naturally between the rows. Machine-made rugs fold rigid and uniform, with no visible knot structure.


  1. Look for imperfections

    This is counterintuitive, but perfection is a red flag. Because every single knot is tied by a human hand, genuine hand-knotted rugs carry minor inconsistencies in spacing, colour saturation, and pattern alignment. If the design is mathematically identical on every axis, a machine made it.


  1. Ask about knot count

    The KPSI (knots per square inch) tells you a lot about quality and authenticity. Hand-knotted rugs typically range from 25 KPSI for coarser tribal pieces up to 400+ KPSI for fine Persian and Kashmiri work. Higher counts mean more labour, finer detail, and greater density underfoot.


  1. Feel the weight

    Hand-knotted rugs are denser and heavier than machine-made rugs of the same size. That weight comes from the sheer volume of knots packed into the structure. You can feel the difference the moment you pick one up.
